Sir Geoffrey Vos

Chancellor of the High Court

The keynote speech will be delivered by Sir Geoffrey Vos on the technological implications of delivering justice during the Covid-19 pandemic. Sir Geoffrey Vos is currently Chancellor of the High Court. He was called to the Bar by the Inner Temple in 1977. He was appointed as a Justice of the High Court assigned to the Chancery Division in October 2009. Between 2005 and 2009 he was a Judge of the Courts of Appeal of Jersey and Guernsey, and a Judge of the Court of Appeal of the Cayman Islands between 2008 and 2009. He sat as a Deputy High Court Judge from 1999 until 2009. He was the Chairman of the Chancery Bar Association from 1999 to 2001 and of the Bar Council in 2007. He was President of the European Network of Councils for the Judiciary from June 2014 to June 2016. He was appointed as a Lord Justice of Appeal in 2013.

James Moss

Acting General Counsel for the Information Commissioner’s Office

James Moss, Acting General Counsel for the Information Commissioner’s Office, will talk on the ICO’s approach to the regulation of novel IT solutions introduced during the coronavirus pandemic including Covid-19 contact-tracing technology. James Moss is currently Acting General Counsel for the UK Information Commissioners Office, having been appointed as Director of Legal Services for Regulatory Enforcement in January 2019. He is responsible for overseeing all the legal work of the ICO and providing legal advice to the Commissioner, executive team and management board.

Professor Claire McGourlay and Jonathan Patterson

Professor McGourlay and Jonathan Patterson will talk on how the Manchester Law and Technology Initiative is driving forward the integration of legal tech and innovation into the law school curriculum and supporting the Manchester Justice HUB in partnership with students. Claire McGourlay is a Professor of Legal Education at The University of Manchester and a National and Principal Fellow of the HEA. She is the Director of External Relations at the School of Social Sciences and is also a Law School lead in the Manchester Legal Tech Initiative. Alongside John Haskell, Claire is driving forward the integration of legal tech into the curriculum and has helped create the Manchester Justice HUB in partnership with students. Jonathan Patterson is Managing Director and Head of Development at DWF Ventures. He works closely with clients to develop new products and services that combine specialist legal expertise with emerging technology, resourcing models and processes.”
